This news caught people off guard.
Gun control is under attack by one lawmaker.
And he is hoping that his sneak attack will put an end to this gun control.
Massachusetts has a few Republicans in their legislature, but they typically tend to be fairly skittish about doing anything that is going to make the Democratic majority upset at them.
That’s because Democrats have total power over committee assignments, local aid, and other things in the legislature that these Republicans rely on to stay in office.
However, one Republican state senator, Peter Durant, has decided to take the fight directly to the Democrats on the draconian new gun control law that they passed.
He is highly unlikely to succeed, considering how badly outnumbered he is in the legislature, but that is not stopping him from trying.
Democrats are surely surprised that Durant is making this move, considering how much of a longshot it is.
But Durant feels strongly that they overstepped with the extreme new gun control law that they passed last year, and he wants to do whatever he can to reverse the damage it caused.
According to The Truth About Guns, “Last year, we covered how sweeping anti-gun legislation passed by the Massachusetts Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Maura Healey resulted in a petition drive to put a measure to repeal the law on the state ballot and a number of court challenges.
“Now, a state senator has announced that he will introduce a measure this legislative session to repeal the law, along with a series of bills to try to strike down some specific portions of last year’s law.”
Gun owners in Massachusetts had better hope that Durant has some serious tricks up his sleeve, given how little support there is for the Second Amendment in the state legislature.
If Durant managed to pass this bill, it would be perhaps the greatest political upset in Massachusetts history, even greater than Scott Brown’s upset Senate victory in 2010.
The article continues, “According to a recent report in The Berkshire Eagle, Republican State Sen. Peter Durant plans to file the repeal measure this week despite his party being far outnumbered in both legislative bodies.
“‘While we recognize that this will be an uphill battle, it is a fight worth pursuing,’ Durant said at a press conference. ‘Legal challenges are already underway, but we believe the Legislative Branch, where this problem originated, can and should provide a faster resolution.’”
He is right that the legislative branch, in theory, is the best place to fix problems like this.
It will be very difficult for him, however, to convince his rabidly anti-gun colleagues to go along with something that would give citizens their freedom to carry firearms back.
Durant’s efforts are laudable, though, and it is certainly not his fault that the Massachusetts legislature is so left-wing and anti-gun.
He is going to do whatever he can to get this across the finish line, and perhaps he will benefit from the fact that Democrats likely weren’t expecting this.
