You read that right. The new world record for a rifle shot is 4.4 miles!
The new record was set in the Wyoming desert by a team of spotters and a shooter from the Jackson Hole, Wyoming based, Nomad Rifleman long range shooting school.
The weapon used for this feat was a specialized rifle built by Scott Austin & Shepard Humphries that took over 1,500 hours to build.
Rifle Statistics
Caliber: .416 Barret
Bullet: Cutting Edge 422 Grain MTAC
Action: McMillan Tac 50
Trigger: Timney HIT Trigger
Stock: Cadex Chassis
Barrel: 40” LRI, 1:9 twist, Terminator T6 Muzzle Brake
The team spent hours on the range, and the record-breaking shot was made on the 69th attempt. With a shot this long, the earth’s curvature has to be factored in.
The bullet velocity was 3,300 feet per second out of the muzzle. Twenty-four seconds later, when it hit the target, the speed was 689 feet per second.
You’re reading this article and want the name of the shooter who made this incredible shot. The truth is, I don’t know. The Nomad Rifleman says the shot is a team endeavor, and in a press release, they state they will not divulge the name of the shooter:
“a friend who has a great trigger finger and a smart analytical business mind did the shooting.” “He is a quiet, self-effacing guy and made us promise that if we got a hit, we would keep his name and identity private, so let’s call him ‘Winston.’”
That’s all for now folks! Please keep sending in your questions, tips, and article ideas. And as always – “Let’s Be Careful Out There.”
