Gun owners aren’t happy about this latest development.
They want to know that the gun rights organizations they support are on their side.
But now there is widespread controversy as one top group endorsed an anti-gun Democrat.
Mary Peltola, a congresswoman from Alaska, presents herself as a moderate who is not unfriendly to gun owners despite her political affiliation.
Unfortunately for gun owners in Alaska and across the nation, that isn’t quite the truth. Peltola has a number of views that wouldn’t sit well with gun owners if they knew about them.
Peltola supports universal background checks, which are the first step on the road to a national gun registry.
She also supports waiting periods for gun purchases, which make buying a gun an unnecessarily difficult process for law-abiding Americans.
While she may not be as anti-gun as some of the worst Democrats in Congress, her views on gun control clearly would take America in the wrong direction if they were implemented.
Despite all of this, the National Rifle Association has endorsed her campaign, in what many are describing as a misguided political move to endear themselves to her and other Democrats.
According to Must Read Alaska, “The National Rifle Association made a shocking endorsement. The group endorsed Rep. Mary Peltola, who is on the record — many times over — favoring gun control.
“Just two years ago, the NRA rated Peltola with a ‘D.’ Now, an endorsement? What has changed? Even the Gun Owners of America has rated Peltola with an ‘F.’
“Peltola wants gun control measures, such as universal background checks, waiting periods, and gun storage laws.”
It’s important to note that Alaska is a red state. Donald Trump will be heavily favored to win the state in the upcoming presidential election.
This isn’t a situation where there are two Democrats running in a blue district, and one of them is “less bad” on gun control than the other.
Peltola holds a seat that should be held by a pro-gun Republican. And by endorsing her campaign, the NRA is making it less likely that will ever happen.
The article continues, “It’s unclear why the National Rifle Association gave Peltola its endorsement this year. Was it looking for a Democrat who it could endorse? Or has the organization simply lost its mojo after multiple internal distractions? Alaskans who are Second Amendment defenders are asking these questions and more.”
This was a very strange and concerning decision by the NRA. Now gun owners and other gun groups will have to go the extra mile to make it clear to voters that Peltola is not actually pro-gun.
There are many patriotic gun owners who are members of the NRA, and the blame for this situation clearly does not fall on their shoulders.
It’s the leadership of the NRA that must answer for why they made this decision, which seems counterproductive to the cause.
Mary Peltola is not an ally to the gun movement in America, and most gun owners believe she is not worthy of such an endorsement.
