This is a great chance for Donald Trump to take a victory lap.

He is winning and the Democrats are losing.

And his opponent just suffered a major gun control defeat.

Democrats are suffering one loss after another, starting with their trouncing at the polls in November, and continuing into the legislative season in 2025 as well.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico is one of Trump’s top opponents, as she endorsed Kamala Harris in the election and was adamantly opposed to Trump’s candidacy for president.

That’s why Trump will surely be happy to see the loss that she suffered on a huge gun control fight.

Guns have never been Trump’s top issue, but he is still happy to see Democrats fall short in controversial fights.

And that is exactly what happened in New Mexico as Gov. Grisham’s gun control plan went up in flames as the legislature rejected the measures she was trying to enact.

Now she is going to have to pick up the pieces from this political disaster, while Republicans watch, and Trump perhaps enjoys the spectacle from his new home at the White House.

According to The Truth About Guns, “Facing dire consequences if anti-gun legislation made it through the legislature and went to gun-hating Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk for consideration, New Mexico gun owners dodged a bullet recently when two bad measures didn’t survive the legislative process.

“One such measure, SB 318, attempted to allow attacks on gun makers and gun retailers by subverting the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. Specifically, it would have expanded the New Mexico Unfair Practices Act to include firearms, parts and accessories, imposing severe penalties of $30,000 per violation and holding manufacturers, distributors and online platforms jointly liable for actions by third parties.”

“Another measure, SB 279, would have banned gas-operated, semi-automatic rifles, along with firearms magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammo.”

Grisham was not pleased at all that these gun control bills did not pass, and she made that very clear in a public statement she put out afterwards.

She called out the legislature for, in her mind, betraying the people of the state of New Mexico for failing to pass gun control.

Here is part of what she said: “I cannot ignore that we failed to adequately address the public safety crisis facing our state. With 270 public safety bills introduced this session and only a handful passed, we have not met our responsibility to New Mexicans.”

It’s fair to assume, given the context, that “public safety” in this case is largely being used as a euphemism for gun control.

Grisham has been the most extreme Democrat governor in the country when it comes to gun control, which is a very high bar.

She would have almost certainly been thrilled to sign these bills and stick it to the gun industry.

Gun owners are thankful, however, that she didn’t get the chance, and Trump will be thrilled if he hears about this.
