A Houston, Texas couple who buy and sell surplus items online recently purchased 108 military surplus M-16 shipping/storage containers from the surplus website, GovPlanet. They picked up the cases and stacked them in their Richmond, Texas storage unit with the help of a friend. As a thank you for the help, the couple gave their friend one of the cases. When their friend opened the case, he discovered the government forgot something – 12 fully automatic M-16 rifles!

All 12 of the rifles were tagged with information including what unit they came from. Being law-abiding citizens, the couple reported the find to federal authorities. The ATF being the ATF decided to execute a search warrant on the storage unit even though the couple let them search for any other weapons voluntarily.

“We just purchased these cases. We never expected anything in there,” the husband, who did not want to be identified, said. “Supposedly, the sender should check every single box to make sure there’s nothing dangerous or anything.”

“It’s just a case, everybody can buy it online,” “We are good citizens,” the wife said, adding she’s now reluctant to buy military surplus equipment and fearful to run afoul of the law.

The ATF is heading the investigation as to how the weapons made it to auction with the FBI assisting.

The surplus company GovPlanet has pulled all storage containers from their auction site pending further investigation.

That’s all for now folks!   Please keep sending in your questions, tips, and article ideas.  And as always – “Let’s Be Careful Out There.”
