Gun control is being pushed hard in the U.S. Senate by Bernie Sanders.
This would have devastating effects on the Second Amendment if it became law.
And this attack has sparked outrage among gun owners.
Even with Trump in office, Democrats have not given up on their efforts to chip away at the Second Amendment and impose gun control on Americans.
Whether they think they can pressure Trump into supporting their efforts, or they simply want to make a lot of noise about it for political reasons, they are pushing it hard.
One of the people involved is none other than Bernie Sanders, who for years had a reputation, rightly or wrongly, as being a “pro-gun” member of the Democratic caucus.
Sanders, who is registered as an independent but caucuses with the Democrats, is a socialist, but he was not always as hostile to guns as he apparently is now.
He seems to have decided to change his position to fit in with his Democratic colleagues and is now a co-sponsor of this bill to ban magazines and institute a “buyback” program.
And gun owners are not happy about what is going on in the U.S. Senate right now.
According to The Truth About Guns, “The so-called Keep Americans Safe Act, introduced in both the House and Senate, would prohibit the sale or transfer of magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds to anyone except law enforcement and prohibit the possession of such magazines manufactured after the date of enactment by anyone except law enforcement; authorize magazine buyback programs; and empower law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and ATF, to seize and destroy magazines that are possessed illegally.”
The main sponsor of the bill is Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, but Sanders is easily the biggest and most recognizable name out of all the co-sponsors.
He apparently sees guns as a liability for him now and is racing to change his position to appease his left-wing base.
The article continues, “Of course, while the Democrats in Congress consider magazines that hold more than 10 rounds to be too dangerous for citizens to own, they are comfortable allowing law enforcement to continue possessing these devices. This situation would leave citizens at a disadvantage if we ever need to defend ourselves against a government gone rogue in the future.”
It’s clear that Sanders is less concerned about that than gun owners are, even though that is quite literally the reason the Second Amendment exists.
While guns are helpful for self-defense, the reason the founders put the Second Amendment in the Constitution is in case the government ever attacks its own people.
This may sound far-fetched, and it hopefully will never happen in the U.S., but there have been cases in places like Cambodia or Rwanda where the government has killed millions of its own people.
America has a backstop against that, but a number of U.S. senators are now trying to chip away at that backstop because of their ideological opposition to widespread gun ownership.
