This was not what the anti-gun lobby wanted to see happen.
All of their gun control plans looked like they were falling into place.
But then it all came crumbling down, which left them outraged.
The anti-gun lobby in Canada is similar to the one in the United States, except it arguably has more popular support and more power.
They have had a consistent ally in the government of Justin Trudeau, as Trudeau has proven himself to be a major opponent of gun owners in Canada and has pushed through many restrictions.
But now the gun control lobby is starting to get frustrated, as the Trudeau government is facing political pressure like never before and hasn’t been following through on their promises.
Perhaps in an effort to avoid political controversy, they have not been so keen on the idea of massive gun control in recent months.
This has led anti-gun lobbying groups in Canada to speak out publicly and express their anger.
And now there is major tension brewing between the lobbying groups who want more gun control and the government that is tasked with carrying out the gun control that they want.
According to National Newswatch, “A leading gun-control group is accusing the Liberal government of watering down a promise to ensure firearms are properly scrutinized before entering the Canadian market.
“The government recently published proposed regulations aimed at ensuring all gun makes and models for sale in Canada are known to the federal firearms registrar.”
“The group PolySeSouvient, a long-time proponent of stricter gun laws, has called for a requirement that federal authorities not only collect such data from businesses, but also carry out a technical assessment of a firearm before it hits the Canadian market.”
“In a statement, PolySeSouvient said the planned measures fall short of a commitment from former public safety minister Dominic LeBlanc.”
This group clearly did not get what they wanted out of the proposal, and they are getting extremely frustrated by it.
The Trudeau government is likely on its way to a historic election defeat, and the last thing they want to do right now is stoke more controversy.
That’s likely why they’re trying to play both sides with the gun control issue.
The article continues, “PolySeSouvient calls the planned federal approach ‘very disappointing,’ saying the new regulations would merely mean the RCMP has the technical information in its possession.”
Of course, gun owners in Canada won’t be thrilled that new gun control is being proposed at all, although they likely won’t be shocked as this is par for the course under Justin Trudeau.
The hopes among the gun community are that Trudeau will be defeated and Pierre Poilievre, who is much less hostile to them, will emerge victorious in the election.
That is where the political winds are currently blowing, which likely makes Trudeau nervous and hesitant about pushing the most extreme gun control possible.
This puts him in no man’s land, as he is no longer making gun control groups happy, and he certainly isn’t making gun owners happy either.
