The Lake County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution with a vote of 4-0 on Tuesday declaring the county the first Second Amendment Sanctuary in Florida.
Commission Chairwoman Leslie Campione was the missing vote on the 5-person commission. She submitted two e-mails expressing her support of the resolution.
Sponsor of the resolution, Commissioner Josh Blake, told the Daily Commercial, “This draws a line in the sand; it doesn’t mince words, and I hope it sends a message to what can best be described as the authoritarian control freaks who… see it as their job to forcibly disarm their fellow citizens. And with all due respect, that simply won’t be happening in Lake County.”
While the resolution is only a statement of support for gun rights in Lake County, it does give gun owners in the area some hope as several Republicans in the State Legislature consider expanding Florida’s gun control laws.
Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell supports the Commission’s resolution declaring the county a Second Amendment Sanctuary.
Commissioner Blake assured the Daily Commercial, “[Grinnell]’s enforcement mechanism, and if he stands up for the Constitution of the United States, that’s good news for the county.”
Hopefully this means that “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation and other forms of gun control will not be enforced in Lake County.
State Representative Anthony Sabatini (R- Lake County) expressed his support of this resolution, telling GPM, “Every county in Florida needs to step up and do this – it’s time to defend the Second Amendment at every level of government.”
Sabatini, a vocal proponent of rolling back restrictions on gun rights, is the sponsor of House Bill 273 in the State Legislature – a bill known as Constitutional Carry – which would eliminate the requirement to get a government permit in order to carry a firearm in the state.
