California Governor and likely future Presidential candidate Gavin Newsom went after Texas Governor Gregg Abbott over Texas’ new abortion law.  Newsom is running ads condemning the law that allows for Texans to sue anyone that provides or assists in an abortion past six weeks of pregnancy and provides an additional $10,000 dollars from the state if the suit is successful. In a game of tit-for-tat, Newsome has signed gun control legislation that mimics the Texas law. The new law allows private citizens to sue anyone who manufactures, sells, distributes, or transports so-called “assault weapons and ghost guns.”  The new law also gives residents who successfully sue $10,000 from the state.

Newsom states in his advertisement :

“If Texas can ban abortion and endanger lives, California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives.  If Governor Abbott truly wants to protect the right to life, we urge him to follow California’s lead.”

Newsom will be running the ads throughout Texas showing his intent to break out of California politics in an indication that he is a serious 2024 Presidential contender.

Many believe the new law is a plan by the left to “Save the Constitution” and force the Supreme Court to reinstate Roe v. Wade by using Texas’ abortion “bounty” system for gun control.

Shortly after the decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson in 2021, Newsom tweeted out his opposition to the decision:

“If states can shield their laws from review by federal courts, then CA will use that authority to help protect lives.  We will work to create the ability for private citizens to sue anyone who manufactures, distributes, or sells and assault weapon or ghost gun kit or parts in CA.”

Newsom and the California legislature have fulfilled their promise and passed the new gun control legislation with Newsom bragging about the new law on Twitter:

“California will be the first state to allow individuals to sue those spreading illegal assault weapons and ghost guns.  If states likes Texas can use laws to put women in harm’s way, then California will use that authority to protect lives.”

We’ll keep Gunpowder readers informed of any updates on this and any other unconstitutional 2nd Amendment legislation.
