An armed school resource officer (SRO) wounded a school shooter this morning in Illinois, stopping the suspect from hurting anyone at the school.

The suspect, 19-year-old Mark Milby, reportedly opened fire in a gym full of seniors practicing for graduation at Dixon High School. Milby ran, and SRO Mark Dallas chased and confronted him. Milby fired at Dallas, and Dallas fired back, hitting Milby in the shoulder.

“No students or staff were injured in the incident,” WQAD.com reported. “Dixon Police believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no further threat to the safety of students or staff. Chief Steven Howell said recent live shooter drills at Dixon High School paid off this morning during an attempted school shooting. Students barricaded doors and took cover as the incident unfolded.”

“Because of [Mark Dallas’] heroic actions, countless lives were saved. We are forever indebted to him for his courage and his bravery,” Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell said.

“[Milby] is in police custody with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound,” according to WQAD.
